| Start |
Begin in left hanmi with the jo
vertical on the floor. Hold the jo with the left hand. |
|
| 1 |
Point the tip of the jo
forward and grasp the base of the jo with your right hand. Slide
forward and perform choku tsuki (1st suburi). [left hanmi] |
|
| 2 |
Raise the jo overhead as you step slightly forward and
to the right with your right foot. You should have the feeling
of pushing the jo forward against an incoming thrust to your
face. This is continuous with the next movement and is not
counted separately. Slide your right hand in to your left hand,
let go with the left hand, and rotate the jo overhead. Step
forward with your right foot and perform yokomen uchi. [right
hanmi] |
|
| 3 |
Slide back to the left rear and raise the jo overhead
to guard position (jodan no kamae). [right hanmi] |
|
| 4 |
Slide forward and perform choku tsuki. Your left hand
is on the back of the jo. [right hanmi] |
|
| 5 |
Slide your right hand to the top third of the jo and
your left hand to the bottom third, allowing the jo to extend
back on your left side. Hold on to the jo with your right hand
and let your right hand guide the end it is holding up in front
of you then down to your right then up as you push it slightly
with your left hand and release it. During all of this you step
forward with your left foot then tenkan around with your right
foot. End with the jo above your right shoulder in the hasso
position. [left hanmi]
You've just performed hasso gaeshi tenkan and should be in left
hanmi, your right hand above your left, both thumbs towards each
other near your right ear. This entire movement should feel like
you're parrying a thrust to your chest coming from the front and
then parrying another thrust to your chest coming from the rear. |
|
| 6 |
Step forward with your right
foot and perform shomen uchi. [right hanmi] |
|
| 7 |
Tenkan back to the front, pulling
your left foot behind you and sweeping your right hand to your
left shoulder. The jo is fairly vertical. This movement parries
a thrust coming at your chest. [right hanmi] |
|
| 8 |
Slide forward and perform choku tsuki. Your left hand is on the
back of the jo. [right hanmi] |
|
| 9 |
Slide back to the left rear,
pushing the jo backward through your left hand until your right
hand is at your left shoulder. Your left hand is close to your
left hip (gedan no kamae). You are not striking to the
rear, but rather moving back out of the way of an attack from
your front. [right hanmi] |
|
| 10 |
Step forward with the left
foot, sweeping your left hand across your body until it is in
front of your right shoulder. Your right hand is inverted and
close to your right hip. The jo is almost vertical. This
movement parries a thrust coming at your chest. [left hanmi] |
|
| 11 |
Raise your right hand so that
it is parallel to the floor, slide forward and thrust. The palm
of your right hand is facing you. The palm of your left hand is
facing away from you. This is a reverse thrust (gyakute tsuki)
to the other person's throat. [left hanmi] |
|
| 12 |
Slide back to the right rear,
let go with your right hand and reach toward the front end of
the jo from underneath. Grasp the jo your the right hand and
flip the jo over. This movement knocks down a thrust that is
coming at your chest. [left hanmi] |
|
| 13 |
Slide forward and perform
choku tsuki. [left hanmi] |
|
| End |
End in left hanmi with the jo vertical on the
floor, holding the jo with the left hand. |
