| Start -1 |
Begin in left hanmi holding the jo
vertically on the floor with the left hand. |
|
| 1 |
Perform choku tsuki (1st suburi).
Then slide back to your right rear, raising your right hand over
your head to bring the jo into upper guard position (jodan no kamae). |
|
| 2 |
Slide forward again, dropping the jo down to horizontal and perform choku tsuki. Then slide back to
your right rear, raising your right hand over your head to bring the
jo into upper guard position (jodan no kamae). |
|
| 3 |
Slide your right hand in to your
left hand, let go with your left hand and rotate the jo over your
head with the tip of the jo moving left and up, so the butt of the
jo is facing forward. Grab the butt of the jo with your left hand,
step forward with your right foot, and perform shomen uchi. |
|
| 4 |
Raise your left hand above your
head into jodan no kame as you shift your weight forward onto your
right foot. Then point the jo above and slightly behind you by
moving the tip of the jo to the right whlie raising your right hand
above your left hand (which hasn’t moved). Step forward and to your
left with your left foot and perform shomen uchi. Your left foot is
forward but your right hand is forward on the jo. |
|
| 5 |
Look to your right rear and move
the left hand from one end of the jo to the other and thrust on your
right side toward the knee of the opponent behind you. Move your
hips to the right as you perform the thrust. |
|
| 6 |
Move your hips the rest of the way
to the right in order to finish a pivot of 180 degrees without
stepping, then step forward with your left foot and perform choku
tsuki. There is no hand change, though the thrust is made with the
other end of the jo from the thrust in #5. |
|
| 7 |
Raise your right hand above your
head into jodan no kame and slide your right hand in to your left
hand, let go with your left hand and rotate the jo over your head
with the tip of the jo moving left then up, so the butt of the jo is
facing forward. Grab the butt of the jo with your left hand, step
forward with your right foot, and perform shomen uchi. (identical to
end of #2 and #3)
|
|
|
8 |
Raise your left hand above your
head into jodan no kame and then rotate the jo over your head with
the tip of the jo moving right and up until it points above and
slightly behind you. Then step forward and to your left with your
left foot and perform shomen uchi. Your left foot is forward but
your right hand is forward on the jo. (identical to #4) |
|
| 9 |
Pivot 180 degrees without stepping
while holding your left hand fixed at your center and using your
right hand to raise the jo vertical and then dropping it horizontal
again pointing in the opposite direction from which it started. You
are in right hanmi with your right hand forward on the jo.
|
|
| 10 |
Slide forward on your right foot
and perform choku tsuki. |
|
| 11 |
Raise your left hand above your
head into jodan no kame and then rotate the jo over your head with
the tip of the jo moving right and up until it points above and
slightly behind you. Then step forward and to your left with your
left foot and perform shomen uchi. Your left foot is forward but
your right hand is forward on the jo. (identical to #4 and #8)
|
|
| 12 |
Take your left hand off of the jo,
place it in front of your right hand and slide your right hand back
to the butt of the jo. As you perform the hand change, slide
slightly back to your right rear. You are now in left guard position
(hidari kamae). Without pause slide forward and perform choku tsuki
(1st suburi). |
|
| 13 |
Slide back to your right rear,
raising your right hand over your head bringing the jo into jodan no
kamae.
Perform yokomen uchi as in #3 and #7, rotating the jo around your
right hand and stepping forward on your right foot.
Slide back to your left rear, reach your right hand to the tip of
the jo, push the jo back through your left hand until your right
hand is against your chest and your left hand is next to your left
hip. This is gedan no kamae. Number 13 should be performed as one
continuous movement. |
|
| 14 |
Step forward with the left foot while raising the jo to
horizontal so your right hand is near your right ear. Slide forward
on your left foot and perform a reverse thrust (gyakute tsuki) to
your opponents face. |
|
| 15 |
Let go with your right hand and
with it reach past your left hand from underneath the jo. Flip the
jo over so that your left hand is in front. This vertical movement
knocks down a thrust that is coming toward your chest. Slide
forward slightly on your left foot and perform a choku tsuki.
|
|
| 16 |
Slide back on your right foot and
raise your right hand over your head to jodan no kame. Slide your
right hand in to your left, let go with your left hand and rotate
the jo over your head with the tip moving left and up so the butt of
the jo faces forward (as in #3 and #7). Grab the butt of the jo with
your left hand, step forward with your right foot and step back with
your left foot. Perform a yokomen uchi strike at knee level,
dropping down onto your left knee.
Reach your right hand to the tip of the jo, push the jo back through
your left hand until your right hand is against your chest and your
left hand is next to your left hip. This is gedan no kamae. Number
16 is performed as one continuous movement, ending on your left
knee.
|
|
| 17 |
Rise up from the kneeling position, stepping forward with
your left foot. Raise the jo to horizontal so your right hand is
near your right ear. Slide forward on your left foot and perform a
reverse thrust (gyakute tsuki) to your opponents face.
|
|
| 18 |
Slide back slightly on your
right foot and let go with your right hand and reach past your left
hand from underneath the jo. Flip the jo over so that your left hand
is in front. Slide forward slightly on your left foot and perform a
choku tsuki. |
|
| 19 |
Slide back to your right rear, and
raise your right hand above your head into jodan no kame. Slide
your right hand in to your left hand, let go with your left hand and
rotate the jo over your head with the tip of the jo moving left then
up, so the butt of the jo is facing forward. Grab the butt of the jo
with your left hand, step forward with your right foot, and perform
shomen uchi. (identical to #7) |
|
| 20 |
Raise the jo to eye level, slide
forward on your right foot and tsuki to your opponent’s head. There
is no hand change from the previous move – your left hand remains on
the butt of the jo. |
|
| 21 |
With the jo still at eye level, slide your right hand to
the forward end of the jo, and as you step backward and slightly to
the left with your right foot, slide your left hand from the end of
the jo to a position about 1/3 of the way from your right hand.
These movements swing the end of the jo that was in your left hand
around in a horizontal strike to your opponents head. |
|
| End |
End as you began, in left hanmi, holding the jo vertically on the
floor with the left hand. |
